KEDONGANAN – With cheerful enthusiasm, students from Widiatmika Kindergarten took part in an educational trip to Kedonganan Beach and Fish Market on Friday, March 14, 2025. This activity was designed to give children hands-on experience with the dynamics of traditional markets, social interaction in buying and selling, and the daily life of fishermen. They also had the opportunity to learn about different types of marine animals, expanding their knowledge of the ocean.
Widiatmika Kindergarten teacher, Ni Kadek Dian Riastiarini, emphasized the importance of this visit, noting that many children today are more familiar with supermarkets, convenience stores, and shopping malls than traditional markets. According to her, most of them had never set foot in a traditional market, despite its role as a community economic center filled with valuable lessons.
"During the market visit, we encouraged the children to interact directly with vendors and fishermen. They learned how to bargain, understand the concept of money and product value, and build confidence in communication. Additionally, they experienced the warm atmosphere of the market, where friendliness and a strong sense of community are key cultural aspects," said Dian.
Upon arriving at Kedonganan Beach, Dian added, the students had the opportunity to meet fishermen returning from the sea. Excitedly, they observed fresh catches such as sardines (locally known as ikan kucing), shrimp, crabs, squid, and tuna. Some students eagerly asked the fishermen about fishing techniques and their daily routines at sea. Afterward, they visited the Kedonganan Fish Market, where they purchased mackerel and snapper, gaining firsthand experience in buying fresh seafood.
"This experience is invaluable for the children. Not only do they learn about different types of marine animals and how they are caught, but they also discover that there are special markets where fishermen sell their fresh catches. It’s an essential insight for their growing understanding of the world," she added.
The excitement continued with various fun activities, including a snake dance exercise, ball-catching games, and a beach clean-up. With a perfect balance of learning and play, the children not only gained new knowledge but also developed social skills and environmental awareness. Their enthusiasm throughout the event highlighted the importance of outdoor learning experiences in broadening their horizons and shaping their character from an early age.
