Widiatmika Elementary’s Morning Literacy: Shaping Intelligent and Ethical Students

JIMBARAN – Widiatmika Elementary School continues to demonstrate its commitment to shaping intelligent and character-driven young generations through its Morning Literacy program. This initiative is more than just a routine; it has significantly impacted students' academic growth and character development.

Amelia Fransisca Sandra Devi, Vice Principal for Public Relations at Widiatmika Elementary School, explained that one of the program's main benefits is the increased enthusiasm for learning among students. Through reading sessions combined with games, ice-breaking activities, and discussions on moral messages, students start their day with positive activities that foster a conducive and enjoyable learning environment.

“Morning Literacy has proven to enhance students' reading skills, both in fiction and non-fiction texts. Based on the 2022–2024 National Assessments, the literacy and numeracy scores of Widiatmika Elementary School students have consistently improved, ranking in the top 1–20% nationally,” Amelia stated.

She also highlighted the rapid development of students' analytical skills in understanding reading materials. This supports more effective and meaningful intraclass learning. The Morning Literacy program not only hones students' reading skills but also helps them gain confidence in public speaking.

“Activities such as discussing stories with peers, presenting narratives, or conveying moral lessons from the texts have significantly boosted their communication confidence,” she added.

Students' enthusiasm for the program is evident from their high attendance rates every morning. Moreover, this reading habit has extended into their recess time, with students frequently visiting the library to find additional reading materials, both in print and digital formats. This trend is a testament to the success of Morning Literacy in fostering a sustainable reading culture.

Amelia also emphasized that Morning Literacy focuses not only on academic skills but also on character building. Through exploring the moral lessons from readings, students are guided to internalize values such as honesty, responsibility, and teamwork—essential life skills.

“Despite challenges such as unfavorable weather conditions or technical issues with supporting equipment, the students’ enthusiasm, along with support from teachers and parents, remains the driving force behind this program,” Amelia remarked.

Through Morning Literacy, Widiatmika Elementary School not only enhances students' academic abilities but also shapes future generations who are prepared to face life's challenges. This program stands as a clear example of how education can create intelligent, critical, and character-driven youth.
