Instilling Noble Values Through Mejaya-jaya Ritual at Widiatmika School

JIMBARAN – As part of its effort to instill noble values in the learning process, Widiatmika School held the Mejaya-jaya ritual on Tuesday, January 14, 2025. This ritual also reflects the school’s commitment to preserving Bali's local wisdom.

Agus Biantara, a Hindu Religious Education teacher at Widiatmika Elementary School, explained that the Mejaya-jaya ritual was attended by all Hindu students from the kindergarten, elementary, and middle school levels. This ritual is rooted in the philosophy of Tri Hita Karana, which emphasizes harmony between humans and God, among humans, and with the environment. Its main purpose is to seek blessings for a smooth learning journey.

“Philosophically, Mejaya-jaya symbolizes self-purification and surrender to God. It teaches students to begin every step in life with pure intentions, deep awareness, and a sense of responsibility,” Agus stated.

Before the ritual commenced, students were provided with an explanation of its meaning and purpose by religious teachers or traditional leaders. This step was aimed at helping students understand and participate in the ritual with full awareness. As a result, they were expected to experience benefits such as inner peace, self-confidence, and spiritual growth from an early age.

“This ritual contributes to shaping students' character by instilling religious values, discipline, and respect for traditions. It also nurtures their spirituality by reinforcing the importance of starting every action with good intentions and prayer,” Agus added.

Agus further emphasized that the Mejaya-jaya ritual aligns with Widiatmika School’s vision to integrate Bali’s local culture with formal education. This tradition not only strengthens the cultural identity of students but also instills moral values within the learning process.

As part of its efforts to preserve local wisdom, the Mejaya-jaya ritual serves as a means of reflection for students to honor traditional values and ancestral culture. By involving students in this ritual, Widiatmika School hopes to pass down this tradition to future generations.
