JIMBARAN – Widiatmika Elementary School continues to innovate in providing meaningful and engaging learning experiences. One of its latest initiatives is the school’s first-ever Science Camp, held on Friday–Saturday, March 21–22, 2025. Designed to make science both fun and practical, the camp combined hands-on experiments and educational games with lessons in independence, collaboration, and responsibility.
The two-day, one-night camp took place on the school grounds and was attended by all sixth-grade students. According to Ni Kadek Sri Sasmita, the Science Camp Coordinator, the program aimed to help students understand scientific concepts through real-world applications and interactive experiences.
“Science learning should be as engaging as possible so students can enjoy the process. One effective method is through direct experimentation, as hands-on experience makes learning more meaningful,” said Sasmita.
One of the highlights of the camp was the Underwater Color Bursts experiment, where students created vibrant color explosions under water by mixing oil, water, and food coloring. Through this experiment, they learned about liquid density and how different substances interact. The activity was followed by guided discussions led by teachers to reinforce key concepts.
In addition to experiments, students also took part in fun science games, where they worked in teams to complete a scavenger hunt and answer science-based questions. These games were designed to encourage critical and creative thinking in a playful and collaborative environment.
Sasmita noted that the camp not only focused on academic learning but also promoted values such as independence and discipline. One example was how students were tasked with preparing their own dinner and breakfast with their group members.
“A noticeable change after this activity was their improved independence. They were able to organize meals on their own and demonstrated greater responsibility throughout the camp,” she added.
Given the success and positive impact of this first Science Camp, Widiatmika Elementary School plans to make it an annual program. The school hopes this kind of experience will continue to enrich students’ academic learning while also helping shape strong character and life skills.
