Widiatmika High School Students Commit to Protecting Bali’s Environment as Green Ambassadors

DENPASAR – I Gede Rai Wisnu Putra and Putu Keisya Aurellia Cahyadewi, two students from Widiatmika High School, were officially inaugurated as Green Ambassadors Batch 2 Bali on Thursday, October 3, 2024. The inauguration took place at the P3E Bali Nusra - Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) office in Denpasar, alongside 128 other participants who completed the Green Youth Movement (GYM) program.

The Green Youth Movement is an environmental education program launched in 2023. It aims to provide a platform for young people to share knowledge and actively participate in environmental preservation efforts. In 2024, participants from Bali’s Batch 2 completed the four-month-long program, which included classroom sessions and online mentoring held from July to September.

Motivation to Join and Valuable Experiences

Rai and Keisya explained that their motivation for joining the Green Youth Movement was to expand their knowledge of environmental issues, gain new experiences, and build connections.

“We wanted to expand our networks, gain experience, and of course, contribute further to environmental preservation,” they said.

They emphasized the importance of awareness that daily actions, such as reducing plastic use, conserving energy, and maintaining environmental cleanliness, can have a significant impact on the environment. Rai and Keisya learned that small, consistent actions by many people can lead to meaningful changes for the planet.

Memorable Moments and Challenges

One of the most memorable moments for them was the classroom sessions and their inauguration as Green Ambassadors. They also participated in a beach clean-up activity, which they found to be effective as it allowed them to collaborate with students from different schools.

“The beach clean-up was not only fun but also meaningful because we got to work together with friends from various schools,” they said.

However, they also faced challenges. One of the biggest challenges was managing their time between schoolwork and the Green Youth Movement program. Nevertheless, Rai and Keisya overcame this by prioritizing tasks, allowing them to complete the program without neglecting their academic responsibilities.

Environmental Projects and Future Hopes

During the program, Rai and Keisya were involved in several environmental projects. They participated in the “Green Generation Week,” which included awareness programs in schools and beach clean-ups. They also took part in an international collaboration with a Japanese delegation on river conservation, which they presented online in English.

As Green Ambassadors, Rai and Keisya hope that the people of Bali will become more aware of the importance of environmental preservation, especially in waste management and the use of renewable energy. They also hope that the younger generation will be more actively involved in environmental conservation efforts in the future.

“We hope that the people of Bali will become more conscious of proper waste management and renewable energy use so that Bali remains a beautiful and sustainable place,” they added.

A Message for Young People

In closing, Rai and Keisya shared a message for their peers: always stay consistent in protecting the environment. According to them, small steps like reducing plastic use, keeping the environment clean, and supporting renewable energy can make a big difference when done together.

“We encourage our friends not to hesitate to participate in programs like this. Consistency and enthusiasm are key to making a real difference for our planet,” they concluded.
