JIMBARAN – The second day of The 3rd Jimbaran Education Festival (JEF) at Widiatmika High School on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, was highlighted by news reading and storytelling competitions. These activities aimed to nurture a generation fluent in foreign languages, creative, and capable of producing accurate information.
“Through the news reading competition, we hope to cultivate a generation that can produce accurate information, especially in the digital era, to minimize the spread of misinformation and disinformation. Meanwhile, the storytelling competition is designed to enhance students' fluency in foreign languages, particularly English,” said Luh Gede Krismayanti, Chairperson of the 2024 JEF Committee for Widiatmika High School.
According to Krismayanti, the competitions not only foster creativity but also improve participants' communication skills. For instance, participants in the storytelling competition displayed creativity by performing in unique costumes, using props, and mimicking voices to suit their narratives. Meanwhile, the news reading competition showcased participants' vocal skills, expression, pronunciation, intonation, and accuracy in delivering news texts.
“These storytelling and news reading competitions encourage students to think creatively. They must create a unique style or presentation, whether in their attire or in the way they tell stories or deliver news in English. Additionally, students are challenged to think critically to captivate both the judges and the audience. In today’s modern era, the younger generation not only needs to master technology but also to develop excellent communication skills to stay relevant,” Krismayanti explained.
The news reading and storytelling competitions attracted participants from various junior high schools across Badung Regency. The events were held at two locations: Room 1 of the Widiatmika High School Building for the news reading competition and the Widiatmika High School Library for the storytelling competition.
In the news reading category, the first prize went to I Gusti Ayu Mirah Danya Maharani from SMPN 2 Mengwi. Meanwhile, Kadek Chandra Vidvananda Putria from SMPN 4 Kuta Selatan won the first prize in the storytelling competition. The winners received trophies, certificates, scholarships for the New Student Admission Program (PPDB), shopping vouchers from Suar Collection, and goodie bags containing books from Gramedia and coffee from Lokalate.
In the news reading competition, the committee provided two text options, and participants performed one text chosen by a draw. For the storytelling competition, participants performed Little Red Riding Hood, a theme selected by the committee. These two competitions are part of the language category, which has been a hallmark of JEF since its inception. The language category aims to apply students' literacy skills in line with the literacy and numeracy programs implemented at Widiatmika High School.
