JIMBARAN - Widiatmika High School is selected as one of more than 400 schools in Indonesia participating in the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA). This program was initiated by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) as a study to evaluate the education system followed by more than seventy countries around the world.
Head of Widiatmika High School I Made Suadnyana explained that his party's participation in PISA was announced in early November 2021 through a letter from the Directorate of High School Development of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology. He said the selection of schools participating in PISA is the authority of the OECD. At PISA later, students will be tested on the extent of their literacy and numeracy abilities.
"We as one of the Indonesian 'athletes' in PISA will get more benefits," said Made.
He gave an example, participation in PISA allows Widiatmika High School teachers to receive direct guidance from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology regarding high-level learning to boost scores at PISA later.
Made himself was invited to take part in the briefing on PISA directly by the ministry, in an event held in Sentul, Bogor, West Java, last week with two other high schools representing the province of Bali. Made explained that the numeracy and literacy skills tested in PISA were closely related to thinking creatively and critically.
Therefore, learning at SMA Widiatmika will also be oriented there, where the questions given to students will hone their creative and critical thinking skills. This element of literacy and numeracy, said Made, is pervasive in various subjects, not only in Indonesian and Mathematics.
"For example, if we study history, the question is no longer a question of 'when did the Diponegoro War happen, but 'what would happen if,'" said Made, giving an example.
PISA for Widiatmika High School students was initially scheduled to be held in 2021. However, the pandemic forced it to be postponed to 2022.
"The assessment will be carried out on May 9, 2022, and will end in early June. Students are asked to work on questions that are brought directly from the Center to the school," said Made.
Made ensured that Widiatmika High School was prepared for the assessment because it had gone through various strategies, socialization, training, and simulations.
"We have been informed by the OECD that there are 27 Widiatmika High School students involved, all students of class X, both science and social studies," he continued.
