PANJER – A delegation from Widiatmika Vocational School attended a table manner event as part of the annual Medivaganza program held at the Mediterranean Bali – Headquarters campus on Tuesday, November 19, 2024.
Their participation was not only an opportunity for learning but also a source of inspiration for developing teaching strategies at Widiatmika Vocational School, particularly for the Culinary and Hospitality departments. The event aimed to produce graduates who are skilled, professional, and ready to face challenges in the dynamic hospitality and tourism industry.
The delegation consisted of Ni Putu Intan Pradnya Parmita (Teacher), Komang Kamayasa (Human Resources), and Ni Luh Putu Yuli Mega Utari (Librarian). According to Intan, the event provided valuable insights into professionalism and work ethics in the hospitality and culinary fields.
“We use this activity as a reference to develop teaching strategies, from planning and processes to evaluation. What we learned here will be applied in class to enhance students' competence,” she stated.
In addition to its relevance for the Culinary department in terms of menu preparation and plating, the event also benefited the Hospitality department, especially in the context of guest services. Intan emphasized that the skills acquired through table manners not only reflect professionalism but also foster work ethics relevant for supporting students in facing industry challenges.
The table manner event covered formal dining etiquette, including the proper use of cutleries, napkin placement, and table conversation etiquette. All materials were delivered in both English and Indonesian, further enriching the participants' experience. Mediterranean Bali students demonstrated all the steps, from menu preparation and food presentation to maintaining restaurant cleanliness.
Participants also had the opportunity to enjoy a complete meal featuring two set menu options, consisting of appetizers, main courses, and desserts. The event was enlivened by entertainment such as band performances, dances, a flash mob, and demonstrations of towel art and banana flambe preparation.
In addition to providing technical insights, the event also aimed to shape students’ character. Mastery of table manners enables students to not only understand dining etiquette but also develop social and cultural skills, which serve as added value in the professional world.
Medivaganza is a hands-on learning activity routinely conducted at the end of each semester by Mediterranean Bali students. By inviting real guests, students are trained to provide professional service directly, preparing them to face real-world challenges in the hospitality and tourism industries. The primary goal of this program is to boost students' confidence and refine their skills before entering the workforce.
